Leftovers ‘09

Thanksgiving is already a week passed and we are now officially in the Christmas season. Although, for the retailers it seems like we have been in the Christmas season since before Halloween. Three months of shopping is a lot. I guess you do what you have to do to get your numbers up.
I tend to be a bit of a last-minute shopper. It is not because I do not care, it is simply that I... Let me put it this way, I like to shop at the last minute. It is more exciting. My fear is that the last minute is going to cost me, as it appears that the inventories will be down at the stores in order to protect against having to carry it over into January and beyond. At least that is what I hear.
I did do some shopping this last weekend for the limited purpose of checking out a blow up for my front yard. Patti has already found two new ones to add to our holiday collection on the front lawn, but there was one advertised on sale at Kmart that I wanted to check out. I decided that it was over priced and buying it would further violate my rule of adding only one a year. Hopefully it will be on sale after the holiday. There is no rule against buying them on sale.
My Thanksgiving football was a little less than satisfying. First, I had to travel to Monticello to watch the semi-final match up between Pulaski Academy and the undefeated “Billies” of Monticello High School. (I guess they were all out of mascots when it came time for Monticello to choose theirs). A combination of Pulaski Academy injuries and a very good Monticello team brought an end to the Bruins’ season – a season in which PA exceeded all expectations after losing 22 seniors from of last year’s Championship team.
Then, of course, we have the Razorbacks. Another team that has defied expectations while still bringing heartbreak to a state that watched several victories slip away. Saturday night was no exception. It is easy to blame the kicker for the loss since that was what brought the game to an end, but there is plenty of blame to go around. Not to mention we were playing number 15 LSU.
When I played Babe Ruth baseball in Bentonville, I had a serious problem. I was a second basemen and had the problem of throwing the ball too hard over to first base. I never learned. That, combined with my inability to hit the ball once I moved up to American Legion brought my career to an end. I was reminded of my refusal to take some off of my throws watching Mallett throw the football. He looks like he is throwing a javelin. Surely someone is telling him to ease up. Hopefully he will listen. No one has called from Petrino’s coaching staff to ask what I think, but if they do, I will tell them. The good thing is, the Bowl game will likely be a lot closer.
Finally, it is the time of year to celebrate with friends and family. I was very excited to get an invite to Sam Laser’s 90th Birthday party in the mail this weekend. As always, there will be more events than any one person can attend or will even want to attend. We will all have to pick and choose which ones we attend. That being said, The James Law Firm is proud to be a sponsor of “Jingle Belles Bash” which will raise money for Centers for Youth and Families. It’s basically a giant dance party, but in cocktail attire and with auction items; definitely a “take your shoes off to dance” kinda bash! Suggested donation of $25 per person at the door lands you at the full bar provided by Glazer’s Distributors of Arkansas, silent auction, catering by Trio’s and a jam-packed dance floor! The event is Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 8 p.m. at Pavillion at the Park. I am not sure if Sam will be at this event, but you will want to come just in case he is!
It is that time of the year again. Be thankful for what you have and remember that there are a whole bunch of folks who only dream of having it as good as you. Remembering the blessings in your life is important, but especially so at this time of year. That is true, even in the CHEAP SEATS!
