‘Till we
William O. “Bill” James, Jr.
Before I start whining about my life, I would like to note that Seven members of the United States military were killed in the deadliest day of fighting this year in Afghanistan. That fact alone dwarfs any of the problems I am about to discuss.
It is probably no surprise to many of you that I have not taken the first step in starting my own lawn service as I said I was going to do 2-3 weeks ago. I thought about it at some length and then realized that, if I could not find someone to do my yard, I probably could not find anyone to a number of yards. That is not to say that there are not people out there, it just means that I am not sure I am capable of finding them.
Nor have I found someone to do my lawns at home and at the office. Nor have I bought a lawnmower to do it myself. I thought about buying a mower. I even looked in the Sunday ads at the lawnmower for sale. I just could not bring myself to make the purchase. Maybe I was just too lazy. Whatever the reason, I do not own a lawnmower unless you count the 1o year old one that is underneath the house at the office.
If there is anything good about all of this, it is that the office is in the middle of being painted and the workers are driving a big lift all over the yard which means the yard looks like a vacant lot rather than the yard I have been trying to prefect over the last 4 years. It is hard to believe I even sued someone over the sod they put down just last fall.
As I pondered my next
move, I actually (for just a
second) thought about calling my Dad and asking him what he thought I should do. Unfortunately, I am about 4 years too late. I try to imagine what he would tell me to do. My guess is he would tell me to quit screwing around and make a decision. Do something. Anything is better than nothing. Good advice indeed.
On a positive note, I did cancel my vacation to Gulf Shores as soon as the oil began to spew into the gulf. Something told me that it was going to be bad. We were scheduled to spend the week before the 4th at the Redneck Riviera. The sad part is that last year was the first time I had ever been there. Now there is talk that the beaches will be soiled for many years to come. It is all about timing.
After we cancelled the condo, we decided we were going to Myrtle Beach. After looking at the multiple flights it would take us to get there, we decided we would rent a houseboat on Lake Ouachita. After we sent the check for full payment on on the houseboat rental, I got cold feet about the amount of work that would be and politely asked Patti to cancel the reservation. Two days later Patti booked a cruise down towards the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. We leave out of New Orleans. That means that we may get to travel right though the oil that ruined my first vacation.
As soon as I get back from my vacation I have to get ready for several cases including one that seems to have no defense. I find those cases quite vexing.
So, this week I have the Arkansas Bar Convention the a couple weeks later I have a cruise and then a trial that is nothing more than a riddle without an answer. The stars all seem to be lining up in such a way that demand that I take a hiatus from my column of one month to regain my composure and refill the spring from which ideas for this column flow.
Everyone needs a vacation. That includes us folk in the CHEAP SEATS!
